You are looking at big old class SUV’s, well
the Fortuner and the Endeavour offer up just that. Now I am putting these
together Head to Head because the Endeavour just got a face lift, is got an
Auto Box and the Fortuner just stepped in to the Indian Market. Now which one
of them gives you that king of the road feel, well we will just find it out.
Both of these SUV’s definitely
dominate the road with their presence, they are large, they are picy, they are
muscular. While see Endeavour is more square and old school, the Fortuner has
more curves and is more modern looking. The airdrome on the bonnet of the
Fortuner gives it real attitude and the Endeavour even with its new Bonnet, Bumper
and Winged Head Lights still looks a bit boring in comparison. Under the skin,
both of them have a body unladed frame giving them the toughness and go any
where ability.
On the inside, the Endeavour is
generously equipped. The textures are good and everything falls to hand easily.
The dashboard is actually looks the more modern one of the two and the Chrome
on Dials also looks great. When you get inside the Fortuner, you could almost
mistake it for being inside the New Innova, its very very similar. So a lot of
people felt, while I am spending so much more with the interiors almost the
same, still I have to tell you that every thing that you need is there and it
falls to hand easily, quality is really good and when I compare the two cars,
its still the Fortuner’s interior that I prefer.
It is odd to compare an Auto and
a Manual, but the Endeavour’s 3 L Motor no longer comes with a manual option.
It is only the Fortuner that offers a manual. The Fortuner’s engine is little
disactive, it doesn’t really feel quick but when you look at the figures on
papers, it’s surprising, it’s the quicker of the two but with a fair margin. It
also spreads and stop very well, all the way from 1500 RPM to 4000 RPM which
makes it very very attractable and drivable in the city. The Endeavour’s engine
is the smoother, more refined of the two
and don’t get me wrong, you do hear the diesel clatter but not much just as you
do in the Fortuner. The Endeavour has a nice punchy engine, got a good strong
bottom and gets off the line nicely. The only thing that lets is down big is
the Auto Box.
Now both of these cars have Four
Wheel Drive but the Fortuner works as an all time while the Endeavour gives you
the option of just driving the rear wheels, this should have a positive effect
on Fuel Economy but with the Auto Box and its shorter Gearing, the Endeavour
looses the efficiency battle with the Fortuner by a large number.
So really its neck n neck here,
one performs better and is more refined, we have a one which has good city
habits and is vastly better efficiency.
Now don’t expect car like
handling from any one of these SUV’s, they are old school, they have laden
chassis, they turn to roll around a bit but on the whole the Endeavour’s body
control is a little bit better, it more together and so it feels nicer down the
corners. But this feeling comes more out of the fact as the Fortuner roles and
has terrible brakes, so you never get that feeling of security. How ever, its steering
ease much sharper and it ease more settled over bumps giving you the advantage
of a better ride. The back seat of the Fortuner is really the more comfortable
of the two, even space wise it’s much better and in the Endeavour you get a
high low board, so you are not comfortable as here. Even the third row of seats
in the Fortuner is much much better in the Fortuner. The 2nd row has
a nice recline to the seat as well so you feel that really comfortable in this
back seat and the ride quality it self is also much better in the Fortuner.
Now a few more things to
consider, like the Endeavour is actually 50000 rupees cheaper than the Fortuner
and the waiting list for the Fortuner, well its endless. To then again the Toyota has more peace of
mind and better ownership experience. Well it was a real close battle between
these two with each one of them having their strengths. But I think in the end,
because of its fresher styling, nicer interiors, and more space and of course
the strong values of the Toyota Brand behind it, it’s really the Fortuner that
edges up.
